Obituary for Mary Alvina Pineau
In God’s Care, Mary passed away Wednesday, May 9, 2018 at Edgewood Assisted Living in Saginaw, Michigan. Age 78 years. Daughter of the late Robert and Elizabeth (Detzler) Pineau, Mary was born January 5, 1940 in Berkley, Michigan. Fondly known as Sister Mary, she was formerly a religious Sister of Mercy. She received her master degree in Family Life and Religious Education. Mary taught High School in Grand Rapids and St. Andrew and St. Stephen High School in Saginaw. While teaching in the Saginaw area, her older brother, Roland lost his life in the Vietnam War and Mary worked tirelessly with the Department of Navy, POW/MIA and family members for over 40 years to locate his remains. In 2007 Roland was buried with honors in Arlington National Cemetery. In 1971 she moved to David, Kentucky to work with St. Vincent Mission and was the founder of the David Appalachian Crafts Center. After 12 years, she returned to Michigan as a Pastoral Associate for Christian Service at Holy Name Parish in Birmingham, Michigan. Following 27 years of service at Holy Name Parish, Mary returned to the Saginaw area to enjoy retirement living, traveling with friends in Northern Michigan, visiting relatives in Prince Edward Island, attending quilt shows throughout the country and staying connected with St. Vincent’s Mission.

Mary leaves to cherish her memory two sisters, Lorraine (Dan) Gensel, Pennsylvania; Lynn (Ed) Kalil, Royal Oak, Michigan; many nieces and nephews. Mary was preceded in death by her parents, two brothers, Roland and Dennis and a nephew, Tim Gensel.

A special thanks to the Kostrzewa and DiMercurio families, former classmate Pat O’Toole, Edgewood Assisted Living, Hospice Care Givers and many other special friends and relatives.
