June Lukas. Age 95 of Brooklyn, Michigan.

Beloved wife of the late Steve. Loving mother of Steve (Teri) Lukas and Jim Lukas. Dear sister in law to John (Donna) Lukas, Richard (Dorothy) Lukas and Irene Knecht. Also survived by 7 grandchildren and 12 great grandchildren.



June Jolan Szopko was born September 10, 1922 in Detroit, Michigan, to Verona and John Szopko. June is the youngest of eight children; she has five brothers and two sisters. June’s parents are from Hungary. They were married with two children when her dad came to America with a friend; he got a job painting Studebaker cars. He then sent for his wife and children. The oldest son John had to stay in Hungary with his grandparents, due to an eye disease. When he was 12 years old he was able to come to America. The family only spoke Hungarian; June had to learn english when she went to school. June attended Morley Elementary School and graduated from Southwestern High School.

June’s first job, following high school, she worked for Parke Davis as a typist as well as a mail clerk, she would deliver mail to the different buildings. She wanted to leave this position during the war, but the company did not want to let her go, she was able to quit eventually and went to work for Detroit Fisher Body.

June married Stephen Lukas on June 19, 1948, when she was 25 years old. Stephen served for three years in the army during World War II, in Germany and France. They waited to be married until after the war was over and he was out of the Army. They drove and honeymooned in California. June and Stephen knew each other through their families, they were from the same village in Hungary. They had two boys, Stephen and James. They moved to Allen Park and lived there for 32 years. June was a homemaker. She did many activities with the children such as; going to the fair, picnics, Belle Isle and the zoo.

In her younger years June enjoyed roller-skating, skiing, picnicking at the park, ice-skating, and tobogganing. Later some of June’s hobbies were bowling, gardening, crossword puzzles and crochet. She still enjoys some of these things as well as reading the newspaper everyday.

June and Stephen took many vacations and saw a lot of the country. They spent three months each winter in Florida, for ten years. One of their favorite vacations together was two weeks in Hawaii, visiting four islands, celebrating their 35th wedding anniversary. Some of the other places they visited were Colorado, Las Vegas, Northern Michigan, Florida, Canada, Barbados, and Niagara Falls, just to name a few.

In addition to June and Stephen’s two children, they have seven grandchildren and twelve great grandchildren. June and Stephen’s son Steve served in the Army and was in Vietnam for a year. Steve is now retired and lives in Arizona with his wife Teri and Jim lives in Novi, Michigan.

June and Stephen were weekenders out this way, in the Lake Columbia area, before Lake Columbia was even a lake. After retirement, they moved to Lake Columbia where they lived for almost 30 years. June and Stephen moved to Arbor Woods Assisted Living when he was sick. He passed away in November 2010. They were married for 62 and a half years. June moved to Brooklyn Living Center the following Spring.

Living at BLC, June enjoys many of the activities, such as the entertainment, Dinner Parties, Wheel of Fortune, shopping trips and more.
