John Carolin
February 20, 1954 - February 10, 2018

John William Carolin died peacefully in his home in Bloomfield Hills MI, on February 10, 2018 at the age of 63, after a long and courageous battle with cancer.

John was born on February 20th, 1954 in Mt. Clemens, MI to P. James and Alice Carolin. He attended Brother Rice High School and graduated from Aquinas College in 1976 with a degree in Business Administration.

He married Penny Frailey, the love of his life, in 1979. John worked at J.L. Hudson’s in Grand Rapids as the assistant store manager and later at Bonwitt Teller. He then joined the P. James Carolin Company, where he worked until his retirement in 2014. Together John and Penny raised three children, Maureen, Jonathon, and Megan. John’s children remember him as a devoted, gentle, and humorous man who encouraged them to pursue their goals. They will forever be thankful to their father who never neglected to express his love, pride, and gratitude for his family.

John enjoyed playing golf and Gin Rummy as well as coaching his adult children's recreational softball team. His family nicknamed him the "dog whisperer" because of his fondness for dogs and their instant affection for him. John was a passionate Notre Dame fan and spent Saturdays watching his beloved Fighting Irish play football. Since he was a young child, he enjoyed vacationing in Fort Walton Beach, Florida. This Easter family tradition continues to this day.

John is survived by his wife of 38 years, Penny, of Bloomfield Hills and his three adult children Maureen (David), Jonathon (Sara), and Megan (Thomas); as well as two grandchildren Ryan and Cara, his sister Patricia, brothers Ralph (Carol) and Joe, and sister in law Mary Ann. He is preceded in death by his parents, James and Alice, his brothers Paul, Jim, and Mike, sister in law Terry, brother in law Brad, nephew Tom, niece Lynn, and grandnephew Laurence.

Family will receive friends Wednesday February 14, 2018 2-8 pm with Scripture service 7 pm at A.J. Desmond & Sons Funeral Home, 2600 Crooks Rd. (between Maple and Big Beaver), 248-362-2500.
