Edward Joseph Mangold

Edward Joseph Mangold, age 93, of Southfield, died May 11, 2018.
Edward was born June 13, 1924 in Detroit, the son of Edward and Harriet Mangold.
He married his high school sweetheart, and love of his life, Marjorie DeYonker on September 1, 1947 at St. Martin Catholic Church in Detroit. In 2016, she preceded him in death after 68 years of marriage. He often said how he loved her all the days, and more than all the days.
Surviving are eight children, Mary Lou (George) Marek, Jean Ann Esselink, Peggy (William) Moylan, Gregory (Dedee) Mangold, Jeffrey Mangold, Ellen Mangold, Amy (Brian) Burgin and Allison (Dan) Meyers; fifteen grandchildren, Jonathan (Jill) Marek, Alex (Corinne) Marek, Andrea (Brian) Akkashian, Adam Esselink, Becky Moylan (fiancé Peter Hoffman), David Mangold, Lauren Mangold, Steven Mangold, Kelly Mangold, Julie Mangold, Justin (Mo) Burgin, Mitchell Burgin (fiancée Kayley Smiskey), Collin Burgin, Danny Meyers and Meghan Meyers; fourteen great grandchildren; and one sister, Joanne Melchoir. He was also preceded in death by siblings Marianne Trokey, Marjorie Collins, Harriet Ann Paulus, Ruth O’Neill and Thomas.
Edward was a World War II veteran. 1st Lt. Edward J. Mangold was a B-24 bomber pilot in the 456 Bomber Group of the 744th Division of the US Army Air Corps. He flew eighteen combat missions to Italy, Austria and Germany. There was a time when the world asked ordinary men to do extraordinary things. Ed was one of those men.
Edward’s Mass of Christian Burial is planned for Wednesday morning, June 27th, at 10:00 am (gather after 9:30 am) at Our Lady of Sorrows Catholic Church, 23615 Power Rd., Farmington.
