Barbara Allen
April 08, 1939 - January 08, 2018

Barbara J. Allen 78 of Monroe MI passed away peacefully in her home on Monday, January 8, 2018. She was a life long resident of Monroe where she met and married her sweetheart, Norman Allen. She was the daughter of Helen (Weier) and Leslie Giles. She is also a direct descendant of Col. Francis Navarre, one of the founding fathers of Monroe County.

Barb was a former member of St. Michael’s Church where she was baptized, made her first communion, and confirmation. She graduated from St. Michael’s grade school in 1953 and was a member of the 1957 class at Monroe High School.

As a cancer survivor she never let that slow her down. In her younger years, she worked at McDonald’s in Milan and later worked at Manheim in Carleton until she retired. She received multiple employee of the month awards from both places. She belonged to the Monroe chapter of the Women’s Republican Party and was an avid theatre goer both off Broadway and locally. She loved to read and stayed up on all current events.

Barbara had a kind heart and had a special spot there for animals. She supported the local humane society and also was a member of the World Wildlife Foundation. She enjoyed feeding the wildlife outside her home, she had deer, cranes, raccoon, and all kinds of birds coming up to her back windows to eat and play.

She is survived by her husband, Norman Allen; three children: Terry (Ann) Allen, Larry Allen of Florida, and Dawn (Jeff Glaus) Allen of South Lyon; nine grandchildren: Heather O’Neal, Nicholas Allen, Heidi Greggo, Christopher Glaus, Kristine Allen, Christopher (Madeline) Allen, Dan Allen, Michael Allen, and Brandon Glaus; and three Great Grandchildren: Dakota, Connor and Edward. She is also survived by two sisters: Nancy Allen and Ruth Flint of Newport; and one brother, Kenneth (Carlotta Salemi) Giles of Trenton.

She is preceded in death by her parents Leslie Giles and Helen Buckholtz, in-laws Leonard B. Allen and Elsie N. Allen, and a brother -in-law Leonard (Slim) Allen.

Visitation will be held on Thursday January 11, 2018 at Rupp Funeral Home from 2pm to 8pm, where a Rosary will be held that evening. Barbara will lie in-state from 10am until Mass at 11am on Friday January 12, 2018 at Saint Michael the Archangel Catholic Church, 502 W. Front St, Monroe. Burial will follow at St. Joseph Cemetery.

Donations can be made to the Hospice of your choice or the Humane Society of Monroe County.
